Breast cancer survivor credits crossfit with saving her life

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – She’s a CrossFit athlete on her way to a global competition, but less than a year ago, Linda Elstun was battling breast cancer.

The Galesburg resident refused to let cancer take away her dream.

Newschannel 3 spoke to Linda on Friday, and she explained how her passion for CrossFit may have saved her life.

In 2014, Linda was at the pinnacle of her career, placing fourth in the CrossFit World Games, training in Kalamazoo.

She never imagined that two months later, she’d be fighting the battle of her life.

At 52 years old, Linda Elstun is going to the CrossFit Games for a third time, joining other athletes around the world in a test of strength.

“I am ecstatic about qualifying and going back to the CrossFit Games; it’s been a long two years,” she said.

Elstun was forced to step away from the games in 2014, due to breast cancer–the last thing she expected to hear.

“It was just, OK, I’m going to do this now, I’m gonna focus on this right now, and then when that’s done what the next thing,” she said.

There was chemotherapy, radiation, and her choice–a double mastectomy.

“At my age, I’m done with them you know,” she said.

And throughout nearly her entire fight, Elstun continued CrossFit.

“I probably am a little crazy, but it’s what I love. It’s who I am,” she said. “It’s a part of how I see myself.”

Best friend and training coach Sara Barnett is inspired, but not surprised by Elstun’s determination. She says she’s a fighter, never accepting defeat.

“She stayed strong throughout all of it; she was never negative throughout any of it,” Barnett said.

Elstun says she owes her life to CrossFit–that it prepared her mentally, physically, and gave her the incredible support she needed to move on to the next challenge.

“My goal is to stay healthy and have fun,” she said.

Right now, Elstun is ranked 17th in the world in her age group.

She will now compete in the World games this July.
